Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts. – Janice Maeditere
Ready or not, Christmas is almost here. The most wonderful time of the year can also be somewhat stressful, especially when it comes to gift shopping. Not sure if I can give gift ideas for everyone, but here are few for the photographers on your list.
1. A new camera
A DSLR beats a point-and-shoot and it’s well worth it. If a friend or family member is into photography, has a good eye but is still shooting with a camera phone or a point-and-shoot, a new camera would be the perfect gift. Check out one of my older articles for tips on how to choose a camera for a beginner here.
2. A lens
A new lens is always a great addition to a photographer’s equipment arsenal. I know good lenses tend to be pretty expensive, but you can find them at a decent price. Check out this blog post.
3. Memory cards
A photographer can never have enough memory cards and they are so inexpensive these days. You need yo make sure to find out what memory cards you need to buy as not all cameras take the same type.
4. An external flash
Most cameras have a built-in flash. In my opinion this should be used very rarely and only outdoors, as a fill-in flash. Most of time, the small flash on top on the camera produces unflattering photos. An external flash can make a huge difference. Read more here.
5. A camera bag
Nothing wrong with having more than one camera bag. I have one that holds only the camera body and two lenses. I use it for day trips and when I don’t feel it is necessary to bring all my equipment. I also have a larger bag which is great for longer trips. This is definitely my favorite. You can find my review here.
6. A camera lens coffee mug
This is a pretty cool gift, especially for the coffee lovers on your list. Pair it with some great coffee and they will love it.
7. A digital picture frame
Not many people print pictures anymore. A digital frame allows them to display their photos without looking through heavy, bulky albums.
8. A Sony smartphone attachable lens
This looks so cool. Just attach it to your smartphone and you have a compact camera in no time. The lens connects to the phone via Wi-Fi.
9. An external hard drive
Digital cameras today can take pictures at very high resolution, but this means huge files. A portable hard drive makes a great gift. Just like memory cards, you can never have too much storage space. I like LaCie because it’s rugged and can be brought everywhere without having to worry about dropping it.
10. A sensor cleaner
DSLRs have a huge downside. Dust can easily enter the camera (especially when changing lenses) and some of it can get stuck to the sensor. There are many ways to clean the sensor but I only use Giottos Rocket Air Blaster. It’s inexpensive, safe to use and it does a great job at removing dust.
I hope you’ll find these gifts for photographers ideas helpful. Happy holidays shopping!
